One of the blessings (or perhaps misfortunes) of being raised in a politicised family is that you acquire a sixth political sense for nearly everything in life.As a young girl coming of age in post-revolutionary Iran, the lively conversations about politics that occurred around the family dinner table firmly instilled in me the idea that inquisitiveness, engagement and passion for a given issue were important.I trace my interest in gender and politics to these discussions and my many follow-up questions that the adults in my life endeavoured at the time to answer.Indeed, the theocratic regime under which we lived invested much of its resources towards the creation of Iran's next generation of revolutionary youth, effectively creating a duality that I and many of my school-aged peers were forced to navigate with grace and apparent obedience.On the one hand, we became keenly aware of our gender through both state gender regulations and extensive societal expectations concerning our dress, our behaviour, and even our fields of study, while on the other we were exposed to powerful and ou tspoken women, in our families and beyond, that challenged these same expectations.The contradictory aspects of our lives were intriguing, to say the least.Such apparent contradictions persisted when I moved to the United States, where gender roles and relations are also based on societal and political expectations, leading me to my own passion of inquiry: namely, the political implications of ideological frameworks that aim to limit women's political roles and influence, and how women respond and push back against systemic marginalisation.This book, which has been years in the making, is the product of many
