BattigelliThree years after my birth, my parents joined thousands of other southern Italians who had made the bittersweet decision to leave their beloved but impoverished homeland and seek a better life for their family overseas.You may have heard the saying: It takes a martyr to live with a saint.Well, a number of martyrs and saints made the trans-Atlantic journey with our parents, tucked away within the folds of their baggage, and even more concretely, within the folds of their conscience, which carried, in no small measure, a portion of Catholic guilt.The saints, whether they appeared on prayer cards, plates or as statues, would be displayed prominently throughout the home to bless and protect our family.They would act like beacons, giving our parents faith and hope as they navigated the turbulent waters every immigrant must face, adjusting to a new culture, language, climate, and environment.Our ship-Saturnia-arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia in April 1963.We journeyed westward to Montreal, where we stayed with family friends for a day or two and then proceeded onward to Capreol in northern Ontario on the first of May.Our family consisted of my parents, myself, my older sister Giuseppina and my younger brother Pasquale.My mother was expecting her fourth child, whom she named Cosimo when he was born in August.I didn't discover until I was much older what a difficult transition it had been for her especially, being separated from her family and friends back in Italy, dealing with nausea on the ship, not understanding the English language, and trying to get used to the snow and the cold Canadian winter!We settled in Sudbury, a mining town with clusters of Italian immigrants.My father eventually found employment at the Copper Cliff smelter plant of INCO, the International Nickel Company.When I was
