512 BOOK REVIEWS / COMPTES RENDUS ELISABETH SABISTON AND ROBERT J. DRUMMOND (EDS), PLURICULTURE ET ÉCRITS MIGRATOIRES / PLURI-CULTURE AND MIGRANT WRITINGS, SÉRIE MONOGRAPHIQUE EN SCIENCES HUMAINES 17, ONTARIO, 2014, 559 PAGES. The edited bilingual volume Pluri-Culture and Migrant Writings / Pluri-culture et écrits migratoires brings together a selection of 33 essays composed for the international conference ‘Pluri-Culture and Migrant Writings: An Interdisciplinary Approach / Pluri-culture et écrits migratoires: une approche interdisciplinaire’, Toronto, 17–20 May, 2012 (organised by the CanadaMediterranean Centre). As stated by Elisabeth Sabiston in the introduction to the volume, ‘the objective of the conference was to reflect on a variety of discourses which address migration – national, social, or individual – and the relationship of those discourses to cultural pluralism’ and to study ‘the ways in which cultural pluralism can mitigate – perhaps eliminate – the so-called shocks of civilisation’. The volume is divided into an introduction, followed by the opening keynote address and seven thematic sections covering a range of case studies on migration, identity and culture in the literary comparative context, as well as offering some theoretical insights into these issues. In his opening keynote address, Patrick Imbert critically discusses two main conceptual paradigms that according to him can be applied to the study of migration, the ‘zero-sum game’ and ‘the non-zero sum game’. Whilst the zerosum game propagates clichés or discourses that perpetuate relationships of power and inferiority, installing a ‘territorial logic’, the non-zero sum game presupposes the democratization and free exchange of knowledge which enable the plurality of cultural interactions. To illustrate this, Imbert offers to analyse two novels in the comparative context of Canada and Brazil: Yann Martel’s Life of Pi (2001), and Moacyr Scliar’s Max and the Cats (2003). Introducing the distinction between modernist and postmodernist / postcolonial writing, he concludes that the main character in The Life of Pi manages to bypass the modernist discourses of the zero-sum game through the adoption of the strategy of transculturalism. The essays in the second section (the largest section of the volume) focus on the study of the concept of migration in the work of Hédi Bouraoui. The section begins with essays by two other keynote speakers, Nicola D’Ambrosio and Rafik Darragi, both giving their own perspectives on the interpretation of pluriculturalism in Bouraoui’s work. Whilst D’Ambrosio concentrates on the contemporary cultural and political significance of the notion of the Mediterranean represented in Bouraoui’s ‘trilogie méditerranéenne’, Darragi analyses the question of identity and alterity in both Bouraoui’s poetry and prose writing. A range of literary perspectives on Bouraoui’s notions of ‘emigressence’ (nomaditude) and wandering are given in the following five BOOK REVIEWS / COMPTES RENDUS 513 essays by Abderrahman Beggar, Angela Buono, Boussad Berrichi, Bernadette Cailler and Samira Étouil. Finally, the last piece in this section is a close textual reading by Elizabeth Sabiston of two novels: Willa Cather’s My Ántonia (1918) and Hédi Bouraoui’s Les Aléas d’une Odyssée (2010) on the subject of female migration. Sabiston raises the interesting question of whether differing attitudes and experiences of migration can be attributed to gender. The five essays in the third section treat of the question of migration and migrants in the context of France. Whilst scholars Sylvie Brodziak and Sabrina Fatmi-Sakri offer their literary readings of texts by migrant writers such as Léonora Miano and Nor Eddine Boudjedia by looking at the questions of cultural memory and hybridity, researchers Nadia Grine and Liliane Rada Nasser approach the same question sociologically in their essays, each of which offers an analysis of identity construction among the Maghrebian and Lebanese communities in France. Finally, Kay Li’s essay is an exploration of pluriculturalism in Gao Xiangjian’s writing viewed through the prism of interactive cross-cultural dialogues. The reader is taken to the analysis of migration in Québec and Canada in the fourth section of the volume. Essays by Sophie Bastien, Rosa de Diego and Sophie Lavoie are thematic readings of a multitude of individual migratory experiences in Ces Enfants d’ailleurs (1992, 1994) by Arlette Cousture, Bachir Lazhar (2003) by Évelyne de...
