Résumé
University and passed away after a long illness in April 2020 at the age of 61.Suning was born in Jilin City in China in 1958, and obtained her B.Sc. in chemistry from Jilin University. She did not intend to be a chemistry major, instead applying to Jilin's biochemistry program--but was assigned a spot in chemistry because the biochemistry program was oversubscribed. At the time she was disappointed by this, but what the university administration did not know was that they had set Suning on a path towards a distinguished career of scholarship, mentorship, and scientific achievement that would have a positive impact on many lives.Suning was among the first students permitted to travel from the People's Republic of China to the United States for graduate studies, and obtained her Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Yale University in 1987 with Professor Richard Adams. She then carried out a postdoctoral fellowship at Texas A&M University with Professor John Fackler, and after a brief period working in chemical industry, she joined the University of Windsor as a faculty member in chemistry in 1991.Her first paper as an independent researcher was published later that year in Inorganic Chemistry, on the topic of yttriumcopper complexes for room-temperature superconductors. 1 She was the sole author on this paper, having carried out all the experiments herself. She described being very nervous to submit this paper, being a new Assistant Professor and writing in her second language. It would soon be highlighted in Chemical and Engineering News.In the years that followed, Suning would become one of Canada's foremost inorganic chemists. She moved to Queen's University in 1996 and never left, being named Distinguished University Professor in 2019 and serving as Associate Head of Chemistry. She won many awards for science, teaching, and mentorship in her career, including the Rutherford Memorial Medal (2002), the CSC Alcan Award (2007), Queen's Chemistry Excellence in Teaching Award (2011), and a Killam Research Fellowship (2012), as well as being an elected Fellow Can.
