Résumé
TvHow are the ethnic media-the Italian media particularly-changing in the digital era in Canada?Whom do they serve today?Is there a future for the Italian newspapers, radio and television stations that depend on this linguistic group for their long term survival?To attempt to answer these questions I would like to present here some considerations adopting a personal, anthropological as well as a sociological approach.I will start by telling a story, a story about communication and information, as they pertain to form, function and content.My friend Krysia's maternal grandmother lived in a very mountainous region of Greece, near a city called Aeropoli, which in Greek literally means, the windy city, maybe because it's windy up there in the mountains.It's interesting to see how the name of the place itself, communicates through the built in semantics of the Greek language.Now, the houses the people of Aeropoli lived in, were precariously perched up on the cliffs, and were situated at a great distance one from the other, making a chat with your neighbour, a bit difficult.Nonetheless, the people of Aereopoli, had a very effective mode of communication which worked very well, up high on the mountains, among the clouds...It was a form of yodeling, you might say, part song, part yell, and part speech.The women in this part of the world, who wanted to keep in touch, would call out to one another, from their houses.According to my friend Krysia, who remembers hearing her grandmother actually doing this, the opening lines in this kind of yodeling sing song, exchange, were: "Bride, is your groom well" and "Bride, how does your groom treat you?" Now, maybe because I am a woman, a mother and a grandmother, I think of this message as a kind of a Morse code for: "Do you have another set of hands available to help you in this precarious place, and are you safe from marital abuse."Some people may disagree with my interpretation, but at least we can agree that the social information exchanged between the women was the actual goal of the exercise.The ingenious medium of commu-
