Between Diaspora and Global Icon: On the Representation of “Italicity” in Global Media
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The importance of Italian Studies continues to be acknowledged at the University of Toronto with the offering of several programs in the field by the Department of Italian Studies. This, of course, not only reflects the long history of Italian Studies at this university, but also the presence of a large Italian community in Toronto, one of the largest in Canada, as well as in North America. This testifies to the significant role the Italian-Canadian community plays in Canada, as well as in the Italian Diaspora. While the relevance of the Italian contribution to the Canadian multicultural makeup is particularly evident in Toronto in both the academic institutions of the University of Toronto and York University and in the cultural setting of the city, one would gain a different perspective by simply moving a few miles away from this metropolitan area to Waterloo, for example, where I presently teach. In that context, the Italian cultural presence as well as academic offerings are of secondary importance or even optional, even if habitually appreciated and acknowledged. The ethnic makeup in Waterloo County is quite different from the Toronto Metropolitan Area and academic programs are strictly built on the maximum student-ratio per course possible. The program which I am trying to establish has to be developed based on the awareness that (rather than being offered to a community which is mainly Italian, Italic, Italophone or Italophile, such as the Torontonian one), it has to be geared toward the interests and needs of a mainly Italophile-only community, with little previously acquired knowledge of, or exposure to, the Italian language and culture and a perception of Italicity which is more informed by general mainstream trends than by direct experience or heritage.
