The Roman Catholic Church in Toronto, through one of its representatives, Father Gianni Carparelli, has taken upon itself a role most commonly associated with social agencies in assisting members of the Italian community in confronting and overcoming the drug problems which have afflicted and crippled some of its youngest members.This role had its origin in 1980 when a mother, in despair, called Fr. Carparelli crying, "My son is a drug addict."Fr.Gianni , as he is affectionately known, immediately called a number of people who referred him back to the first person on his list.On that day he and his collaborators realized they had to take action themselves.It took from 1980 to 1991 to convince the young man, a 20-year drug addict with a criminal record that he needed help.He is now in one of the best rehabilitation centres in Europe.Born in Viterbo in 1942, Fr.Gianni Carparelli, was ordained in 1966 and after completing studies in philosophy and theology at the Università Laterano in 1971, and in psychology at the Università Salesiana and the Istituto Psicoterapia Analitica of Rome, turned his attention to the field of drug addiction in Italy and Brazil.He taught in the Faculty of Theology in the Seminario Santa Maria della Quercia, in the school of Social Service in his native Viterbo and later, in 1976, at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro working at the same time at a family psychotherapy clinic on drug related problems.He worked for one year in Frankfurt, Germany, before coming to Canada in 1980.He is at present pastor at the Church of Il
