Many contemporary discussions about the nature and meaning of identity or selfhood focus on the place, position, and status of different cultural groups within the geo-political borders of a particular nation-state or "homeland" (Modood and Werbner).This is not too surprising given how the passion of and for identity is, according to Janet McLellan and Anthony Richmond, grounded on the contemporary conditions of quotidian life.Globalization, new communications and transportation technologies, free-trade, post-coloniality, and the break-up of the Soviet Block all operate to destabilize the once taken-for-granted isomorphic connection between one's homeland, culture, and sense of self (Gupta and Ferguson).Despite this, however, the links between culture and homeland continue to strongly influence the question of selfhood (Clayton).Cultural identity in particular, to paraphrase Homi Bhabha, lingers on as stubborn incommensurable chunks of selfhood even in a world increasingly characterized by flows, mixing, and hybridity (Appadurai).Is cultural identity then falling apart or re-stabilizing itself?Is it best described in the language of roots or in the language of routes?(Yon).Mikhail Bakhtin encourages us to consider both.His work underscores how both the notions of roots and routes operate in relation to everyday commonsensical notions of identity; how, that is, cultural identity can be simultaneously fixed and fluid (Murray).Yet, the pushes and pulls of cultural identity may also give rise to a number of attendant ambivalences, uncertainties, and contradictions (N.Harney).They may engender both declarative and interrogative views of identity (Bhabha), they may engender the problematic of identity.The question of the selfhood and how various identity categories are taken up centrally informs this paper.I deal here with the identity-talk of 12 members of an Italian-Canadian book club-aptly named 1 Litterati-in the small northwestern Ontario city of Lakeside.!
