In the global village, is hyphenation a temporary stop on a journey towards some hybrid promised land?And if Thomas Wolfe is right that you can't go home again, how long before we find our bearings to new shores?(Damiano Pietropaolo) On 3 November 2007, the Italian Program of the Department of Linguistics and Languages at McMaster University (Hamilton, ON) organized a conference called Italian-Canadian Culture in the New Millennium.The event took place in the austere Gilmour Hall atMcMaster University, a room that provided the appropriate backdrop to such a passionate and productive meeting.The image on the poster for our conference was that of Janus, the god who is known to many as having two faces.On considering the topic of our event we debated on a symbol that could capture the essence of the papers that would be presented.The discussions we had on the reality of hyphenated identities all came to the general consensus that we were dealing with duality in the realm of cultural identity.We agreed then that Janus, as the embodiment of duality, would be the best image for representing a conference that would confront the delicate issues of immigration, integration, and hyphenated identities.Further research showed us that Janus is the Roman god of thresholds and beginnings, and is known as the god of entrances and exits.His two faces enable him to see ahead and behind, and he is associated to wisdom for his ability to see the past and the future.He is also associated with ambiguity and the combination of positive and negative.In some cultures, Janus represents the doubleedged sword or the knife that cuts both ways (Tresidder 258; Biedermann 189).This last association convinced us that Janus would Italian Canadian Culture in the New Millennium,
