Résumé
Asa very young girl I was often angry and felt thwarted and unfulfilled.My ethnicity felt like a trap from which I could not escape.In my narrow world where every movement was scrutinized and circumscribed, I raged against my role in life.I had no control over the most basic of freedoms: the way I looked, what I wore, who my friends were, which school to attend, the parameters of my school and social activities.So, fuelled by hormones and a long suppressed resentment I tried to contain these emotions that surfaced in a full blown rage at my circumstances.Then, with fewer restraints, I began to act exactly as I wanted to act with dire consequences for me and those around me.My rebellious behaviour did not abate until I left home to attend university in another city.When I first began to write fiction at the not so tender age of thirty, I composed short paragraphs, snippets, for my fictional characters.These paragraphs and one pagers were invariably sombre and a bit tortuous to read.I was once discouraged by criticism that I was "always writing about victims."I will concede the initial scenarios or vignettes were never happy.But that's not how I saw my work-these were not stories of victimization.I saw it as writing about ... life.And life was not easy for a girl who did not follow the expected path in Italo-Canadian culture: education, stable employment, marriage to someone from my own background, mortgage, children.It's not that I did not eventually embrace some, if not all, of these expectations but I did arrive there in a somewhat convoluted way perhaps.I've given a great deal of thought to the connection between my writing and my heritage.Would I have taken the path I have taken as a writer if I were not Italian, not a Southerner, not a Sicilian, and subject to the cultural norms of that culture?At first I wrote to soothe myself, sort of as a catharsis.I had a voice and it was not being heard.I felt I had grievances to air and a right to air them if only on paper.I never possessed the right to say "no," to take exception to the path that others were trying to carve out for me as a child and as a teenager.My fictional characters were often like me-anxious, confused, angry at times, in difficult situations as I often was as a teenager, battling against what I perceived to be formidable opponents: rigid par-25
