The Italian Cultural Institute in Toronto was established by the Italian Government in 1976, to serve the Provinces of Ontario and _ Manitoba. It was the second in Canada, after the one in Montreal" which began to operate in 1962 for the Eastern Part of the country.'The choice of Toronto as a location for a new Institute was largely determined by the fact that it is, after New York, the city in North America with the second largest population of people of Italian origin. The presence of immigrants in the city and the surrounding areas are conspicuous and visible; so much so that the establishment of an Institute was not only desirable but essential if the Italian heritage was to be kept alive for those immigrants and the generations of Italian Canadians to come. The Institute would also guarantee a better understanding of the cultural values of Italians for the rest of the population with a different background. At first, the Institute was simply an office within the Italian Consulate. But the same considerations which led to its establishment led to the acquisition of a building specifically meant for its use.The present quarters were acquired in 1979 and, after the necessary restructuring, the Institute moved there in 1982.The Huron Street building, a Queen Anne style three storey house built in 1897, includes the offices of the personnel, a library open for public consultation and a space for lectures, exhibitions and receptions.Located in the centre of Toronto, the Institute has now a well defined physical presence, near one of the major institutions of higher learning in the city, namely the University of Toronto, which, by the way, has one of the largest Department of Italian Studies in the world.|~The Cultural Institutes abroad were first created by the fascist_ Government in 1926.Known as " C a s e d'Italia," they reflected Mussolini's interest in maintaining contact with those many Italians who had emigrated from their homeland. The Institutes' principal objective was the teaching of Italian. The personnel was mostly drawn from Italian secondary school teachers within the Ministry of Public Education, rather than from career diplomats employed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.(In addition, of course, there were
