In 1971, on the occasion of the one hundred-and-twenty-fifth anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Hamilton, a commemorative book was published.Its title, Pardon My Lunch Bucket, proudly acknowledged that Hamilton was a working class town built by a teeming working class earning its wages in the foundries of Stelco and Dofasco."Steel City" is still the nickname of a community that has grown in this century to become one of the largest industrial centres of Canada.The extensive development of the post World War Two years which almost eradicated the old Victorian town to transform it into a modern city earned Hamilton another sobriquet: "the ambitious city."This seems appropriate for it has been in these last thirty or forty years that Hamilton acquired and developed a number of important cultural institutions.McMaster came to Hamilton in 1930, but most of its present campus dates from the sixties.Hamilton Place and the Art Gallery' were respectively completed i in 1973 and in 1977, the new modern Civic Library in 1980, while the Du Maurier Theatre Centre was inaugurated only last year.The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, though it was originally formed in 1884, emerged in its present form in 1949 and became an important city institution in the early seventies under the direction of Boris Brott.In 1973, his predecessor, Lee Hepner, founded the McMaster Symphony.'During this time several musical groups like the Te Deum Concerts under the direction of Richard Birney-Smith were slowly emerging and improving the quality of life of a city that until then was mostly a place to earn a living.It was only in 1979, thanks to the efforts and contributions of some members of the Italian community, that the foundations of a permanent professional opera company were set up.This preamble is necessary if we are to understand the context and the limits of the Italian cultural impact on the city.Italians are quite evident in Hamilton today.Semi-official statistics put their
