I know I will disappoint you, The "Genoese connection" has nothing to do with espionage, nor with organized crime.I am not even prepared to announce the discovery of new archival evidence about the so-called Apocryphal Canadian Detour of Christopher Colombus First Voyage.Yet, the "Genoese Connection" I am referring to, could quite properly satisfy one of the goals of the current Columbian Celebrations, namely to be "in praise of the purest glories of Genoa," since it signals a very remarkable, even though long forgotten, contribution of the glorious city of Genoa to the welfare of both the archdiocese of Toronto and the Italians living here at the turn of the century.'The facts are quite simple, and could be described as the earliest documented case of "a cultural exchange" between Canada and Italy, or, to be more specific, between Genoa and Toronto.As a matter of fact, in the last two decades of the nineteenth century, a number of candidates to the priesthood of the archdiocese of Toronto completed their theological studies, not in the Collegio Canadese of Rome, but in the Collegio Brignole Sale of Genoa.It goes without saying, that when they returned home, after a four-or five-year stay in the Genoese seminary, where the majority of the students were Italians and the school language was likewise Italian, the Canadian students, now become priests, were fluent in both the written and spoken Italian language.I came to the discovery of this "Genoese Connection" of the Archdiocese of Toronto by mere accident.A few years
