Outstanding <scp><i>L&O</i></scp> Associate Editors and Reviewers

Since December of 2018, when I first began as Editor-in-Chief at Limnology and Oceanography (L&O), I have had the distinct pleasure of working with 94 Associate Editors, including Guest Editors, and 2735 reviewers, as we processed 1854 manuscripts with 5454 total reviews, a total of which have so far resulted in 750 published articles, with 185 manuscripts still under consideration. Below are just some of the team of talented researchers who have participated in this grand process during the preceding 18 months, and in doing so, have made my job of keeping L&O at the top all that much easier. This quarter's team of outstanding Associate Editors includes some with quite a few years of experience at L&O and a few who were appointed within the last year or so—all fantastic scholars. The seven outstanding Reviewers listed below provided an average of about four manuscript reviews with a mean turn-around time of 18 days, and importantly, provided authors with exceptionally high-quality, critical evaluations of their manuscripts. I know that I speak for all of us who have endeavored to publish our research in ASLO's flagship journal when I say that the excellent science inside every L&O article is made available to the journal's readership through an amazingly impactful peer-review process by so many dedicated scientists behind the scenes. By closely linking laboratory experiments, research at sea, and ecosystem modeling, I aim to understand how phytoplankton cope with environmental changes and what the consequences may be for the functioning of marine ecosystems. I am honored to serve as an Associate Editor for L&O because it brings me into direct contact with exciting current research. I also enjoy the appreciative interactions with authors and reviewers to support the completion of innovative research articles.” YUNLIN ZHANG Professor, Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, China. “My study aims at understanding the physical processes and ecological environment effects under the influence of human activities and climate change. Specifically, my study interest focuses on three aspects: (1) lake optics and water color remote sensing, (2) lake thermodynamics process and global change response, (3) dissolved organic matter source, cycle, transformation, and carbon emission effect. Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, CAS is the only national comprehensive research institution with the lake as the main study object in China. L&O is considered as the most prestigious journal in our institute. Our excellent study results are encouraged and recommended to be published on L&O. Therefore, it is my great honor to serve as the Associate Editor with many opportunities to exchange the latest study progress with the world's limnologists. I am often inspired by many innovative ideas and results in handling manuscripts. I mostly assess how seaweeds, corals, and other invertebrates in these ecosystems will respond to climate change and local drivers. My goals are to improve science in my field and to assist others with improving their science. L&O is a very prestigious journal in my field, with a strong reputation for publishing high-quality science. Therefore, it is a great honour for me to be able to give back to my research community by acting as an Associate Editor for the journal.” MARIE-EODIE PERGA Professor, Faculty of Geoscience and Environment, University of Lausanne, Switzerland. “I work on the ecological and biogeochemical interface, primarily in alpine and mountain lakes. My recent projects aimed to clarify the role of alkalinity and calcite precipitation in a lakes' carbon cycle and to delineate oxygen dynamics under ice. I enjoy deriving mechanistic hypotheses from observations at minute to decadal time scales, which are further tested using models as proofs-of-concept. Serving as an Associate Editor for a high-standard journal like L&O is a double privilege. I am among the first to read exciting scientific research just out of the oven. Second, I can contribute to making the peer-review process fair, rewarding, and valuable for both reviewers and authors.” OSVALDO ULLOA Professor, Department of Oceanography and Millennium Institute of Oceanography, University of Concepcion, Concepcion, Chile. “I am a biological oceanographer with research interests in the microbial molecular ecology and biogeochemistry of oxygen-depleted oceanic waters. My most recent work also focuses on the exploration and study of ultra-deep (hadal) environments, particularly the Atacama Trench. I am an Associate Editor for L&O as a service to the greater aquatic research community.” KIM VAN METER Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, USA. “I work broadly in the domain of water system science. I earned my Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Waterloo in Canada, and my research interests include water quality, nutrient cycling, and the use of remote sensing data and other geospatial proxies to better our understanding of aquatic ecosystem function. As an Associate Editor at L&O, I very much enjoy contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the aquatic sciences by reviewing and evaluating research submissions. The position also has provided invaluable opportunities for networking and collaborating with other scientists, and for staying up-to-date on some of the latest developments in water quality research.” HANS DAM Professor, Department of Marine Sciences, University of Connecticut, Groton, CT, USA. “I am a biological oceanographer broadly interested in plankton ecology and evolution with a particular fondness for copepods. Early in my career I studied the role of zooplankton on biogeochemical cycles, and phytoplankton and particle aggregation. For the last two decades I have used an evolutionary approach to achieve mechanistic understanding of reciprocal interactions between toxic phytoplankton and their predators as well as copepod adaptation to ocean warming and acidification. I cherish ASLO and its flagship journal, L&O. I enjoy reviewing L&O manuscripts because it is a way to keep abreast of cutting-edge material in aquatic sciences. The interaction of these different species increases the solubility and bioavailability of trace metals which are essential macro-nutrients for all oceans. I enjoy reading papers from L&O as it always increases my knowledge on diverse aspects.
