Ethnic koinēs and the Verbal Structuring of Reality: Psycholinguistic Observations on Canadian Italian
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
One of the more intriguing questions that has captured the fancy of philosophers, anthropologists, psychologists, and linguists, and whose epistemological genesis is as old as civilization itself, is the nature of the relationship between reality -the world of ideas, concepts, objects, feelings, actions, etc. -and how it is codified by language. The crux of the question is to determine whether there is any direct link between the ways in which we think about and perceive reality and the particular language we speak.Does our language give reality a «structure»?Does it, in other words, give a particular shape to the perceptual and cognitive filters through which we process reality, and from which we extrapolate our conceptual categories?Or, on the other hand, is cognition independent of culturespecific systems for codifying perceptual phenomena?Although this question surfaces in diverse forms in the history of Western philosophical thought,! it receives its most testable articulation, from a scientific standpoint, in the writings of the anthropological linguists Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the twenties, thirties, and forties.? It has, in fact, come to be known as the «Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis», or vicariously as the «Linguistic Relativity Hypothesis.»According to this hypothesis, verbal symbols are seen as much more than simple mediators of thought, but rather as shapers of the very thought patterns they embody. In a phrase, the Mise
