The book develops an ethnography around these conceptualisations to further explore how the raja defines the way in which the subjectivities of the communities affected by centralised border policies experience this form of power and sovereignty.Patriotic citizenship is how the authors describe this form of articulation around the landscape and the border that literally has ripped apart communities to bring together both cultural citizenship and necrocitizenship.Looking at the aesthetics as well as the visual elements of how Mexican American communities face the militarisation of the border landscape and the way in which communities are resisting it, patriotic citizenship explores how excluded communities make sense of sovereignty and identity while experiencing a constant state of Exception.An underlining discussion of the book is how neoliberalism can geographically exercise authority and power within communities as the frame of a state of exception and the draft form of authoritarianism to secure national borders.The authors reflect on this issue in terms of the extent to which borders are not only drawn for keeping people out but to imprison the populations that they ought to protect (p.48).The book looks at how democratic arrangements give communities voices, such as how local hearings and meetings are used as spaces to enforce militarisation and exclusion of the border decided by the central administration.The media also plays a role in the way in which the border landscape is portrayed as space of death, aesthetically constructing an image that fits within the central narrative of why the military force is needed in the southern border.Rather than to build bridges within divided communities by the raja, the media contributes to the state narrative of building walls as a matter of national security.
