Résumé
PrologueTravellers in jetliners traversing the skies over Atlantic Canada today are pleased when even from afar they glimpse Prince Edward Island, a slender crescent of verdant land resting in the southern basin of the Gulf of St Lawrence. To the south, the Northumberland Strait separates the Island by at least nine miles from the mainland provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.Lobster and groundfish have abounded in these waters, and dairy farming and potato growing have prospered in the relatively mild climate and arable soil.Whereas maple, birch, pine, and spruce thickly forested much of the land in the early nineteenth century, today the gently rolling landscape shelters golden grainfields and green croplands, which contrast with the rust-red soil, the many sparkling bays and estuaries, the red sandstone cliffs, and the pink sandy shores. The Island is only a hundred and forty miles long and from four to forty miles wide. Each summer nearly one million visitors augment the 135,000 year-round residents who have spread over the three counties -Kings in the east, Queens in the centre, and Prince in the west.In both area and population, Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest province.Nevertheless, studious excavators still find treasures galore in its cultural endowment. The aboriginal Mi'kmaq people (also spelled Micmac), who for centuries were the seasonal occupants, called the island Abegweit (pronounced Abahquit but may be spelled Epekwitk, meaning "lying parallel with the land," though often popularly translated as "cradled on the waves").French colonists in the early eighteenth century named it Île Saint-Jean.After their takeover in 1758, the British called it St John's Island until it was officially renamed in 1798 in honour of Edward, Duke of Kent, commander of British forces in North America (and the future father of Queen Victoria). In 1873 the colony became a province in the Canadian Confederation.Today's residents of Prince
