There was an air of optimism in Aboriginal communities across the country when I began preparing this preface for the fourth edition of An Illustrated History of Canada' s Native People.The federal Liberal government led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had just been elected and sworn in and a centrepiece of his campaign was the promise to fundamentally change the relationship between Canada' s federal government and Aboriginal peoples.Symbolic of the future and the potential for change, Aboriginal children were invited to perform at his swearing-in ceremony.Theland Kicknosway, a twelve-year-old Cree hand drummer, led the procession of government officials and dignitaries into Rideau Hall in Ottawa, the official home of the governor general of Canada, where the ceremonies took place.Following Kicknosway' s performance, Governor General David Johnston acknowledgedfor the first time at a swearing-in ceremony, it is believed-that the event was taking place on traditional Algonquin territory.As the event unfolded, two young girls of Inuit descent, Samantha Metcalfe and Cailyn Degrandpre, performed Inuit throat songs.To conclude the event, the young Métis dance troupe Prairie Fire Jiggers-Hunter, Riley, and Jacob McKenzie-led the exiting procession from Rideau Hall.In these and other ways, the art, heritage, and futures of the three Aboriginal groups recognized in Canada' s constitution received acknowledgment-the First Nations, the Inuit, and the Métis.The new government included eight Aboriginal MPs, the highest number in Canada' s history.Prime Minister Trudeau appointed two of these MPs to key cabinet positions.One was the Honourable Hunter Tootoo, an Inuk businessman and former elected member of the Nunavut legislature.He was appointed minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard.The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould was the other cabinet appointee-she became the chief law officer of the Crown as minister of Justice and attorney general of Canada.Minister Wilson-Raybould is a member of the We Wai Kai Nation/Cape Mudge Band of British
