755 One year review of child death data in greater Glasgow and Clyde

Objectives The mortality rate within Scotland for under 18s is higher than in any other Western European country.1 Just over a quarter of these deaths are preventable.2 The National Hub for Reviewing and Learning from the Deaths of Children and Young people, commissioned by the Scottish Government, was launched on 1st October 2021. This is the first system of its kind in Scotland and aims to ensure a quality review is conducted on the deaths of all live born children up to the date of their 18th birthday, or 26th birthday for care leavers in receipt of continuous care or aftercare at the time of their death. Our objective was to review the data collected in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (GGC), the largest health board in Scotland. Method This was a retrospective review of all cases recorded within the GGC Child Death Review research database between 1st October 2021 and 30th September 2022. Those who did not meet criteria for Child Death Review within GGC were excluded, specifically those aged 18–26 years old who were not in ongoing receipt of care at time of death, and children who died within GGC but who resided in a different health board. Results 58 cases met the inclusion criteria of which 37 (64%) were male. 69% of deaths occurred in infants (under 1 year of age). 38% were under 28 days old. Graph 1 illustrates the distribution of child death reviews over the inclusion period. Perinatal/neonatal event accounted for the largest proportion of deaths (38%). of these deaths, 68% were related to prematurity, meaning that prematurity accounted for 26% of all child deaths reviewed. There was only one death amongst 18 – 26 years old which met the inclusion criteria and this was secondary to trauma. Graph 2 shows that the majority of deaths occurred in children from the most deprived areas. Where place of death was known, 82% of deaths occurred within the hospital, 5% in a hospice and 13% occurred outside of a hospital. 98% of families were referred to Child Bereavement UK. Conclusion This abstract describes one year of child death review data since the official launch of the National Hub within GGC. Further data collection over time, and in conjunction with other health boards, will allow us to identify common themes surrounding child death in Scotland and target action to reduce preventable deaths.
