Résumé
Much of the background to this book was acquired during preparation of other related, even unrelated books and articles, so that my thanks are initially due to the Canada Council, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and the Dalhousie Research and Development Fund, all of which at various times did so much to make those researches possible, whether at the Vatican Archives in Rome, Montpellier, or London, Berkeley, and elsewhere in the United Kingdom.In 1987 I was invited to deliver the Bertie Wilkinson Memorial Lecture at Toronto, choosing as my topic "Edward II: A Continuing Enigma."It was an honour to pay tribute to a historian who had made extensive and detailed contributions to the subject on which I was so rashly to engage.It brought to mind many convivial roast beef banquets at Hart House in his company.My more immediate debt is due to Clare Hall, Cambridge, for my initial visiting fellowship, which saw the inception of this book more or less in its present form, my subsequent visits there, and my acceptance as a life member in 1990.One of the great concomitant blessings was the use of the Cambridge University Library in which I examined most of the secondary sources and a number of the primary ones.It was there too that I was first introduced to the advantages of word-processing on a Macintosh computer, a mainstay ever since.From my son-in-law, Professor Alexander Jones, of the University of Toronto, an expert in such matters, I am much indebted for solving the many software hazards which afflict the inexperienced.Adrian Suggett, another of my sons-in-law, a PC hardware engineer, I am happy to thank for coming to my rescue more than once when the "machinery" proved recalcitrant or inoperative.Thanks to both of them and to Macintosh for relegating the labours which I recall in connection with earlier volumes to mere horror stories from the past.I am, of course indebted, as before, more particularly to the Bodleian Library, British Library, Public Record Office, and the Institute of Historical Research, not to mention the many English local Record Offices.Adrian James, the assistant librarian of the Society of Antiquaries of London, has always promptly provided copies, as well as the books themselves.More recently I have been par-Rclqio'wkdgme.nts
