Invited Perspective: Linking the Intergenerational Impacts due to Mercury Exposure in Grassy Narrows First Nation, Canada

Between 1962 and 1970, the Dryden Chemical Company in Ontario, Canada, dumped 10 metric tons of mercury (Hg) effluent into the English-Wabigoon River system near Grassy Narrows, a First Nations community.1 Methylmercury (MeHg) is a potent neurotoxicant. 2 Concentrations in fish tissue sampled from the river ranged up to 24 ppm, which was up to 50 times higher than Canada's safe fish consumption level (0:5 ppm).3 Fish tissue is also a rich source of beneficial nutrients (e.g., omega-3 fatty acids) that modify the toxicity of MeHg; however, benefits are reduced or absent when MeHg exposure is highly elevated.4 This was likely the case for residents in Grassy Narrows, where fishing and fish consumption comprised a large part of their cultural beliefs, traditions, and diet.5 Residents of Grassy Narrows also served as local fishing guides for tourists, which included preparing and eating a "shore lunch" of freshly caught fish. 1 The fallout from this environmental disaster is the focus of the seminal study by Mergler et al. concerning the intergenerational effects of MeHg poisoning on children's mental health.6 The authors used structural equation models (SEMs) to assess the intergenerational effects of grandmaternal (G0) and maternal (G1) MeHg poisoning on children's (G2) mental health, including risk of attempted suicide, while controlling for maternal psychological distress and other confounders.The results of this study are both compelling and moving.Within the Grassy Narrows cohort, biomarkers for MeHg exposure were available only for the G1 mothers; however, because of the timing of biomarker and data collection, it was possible for the authors to estimate the grandmothers' (G0) and child's (G2) potential MeHg exposure, linking MeHg toxicity across three generations.According to the final SEM models, the child's (G2) mental health status-based on maternal report of emotional and behavioral problems and whether the child had ever attempted suicide-was mediated by three generations of MeHg exposure, including umbilical cord blood Hg (representing G0/G1 exposure), maternal (G1) childhood MeHg exposure, and maternal (G1) fish consumption while pregnant with G2 child.Moreover, grandpaternal (G0) occupation as a fishing guide, used as a proxy for the grandfather's high MeHg exposure, also contributed to the child's (G2) mental health outcomes.Most studies concerning prenatal MeHg exposure focus on children's cognitive end points 2 ; however, results from the
