Résumé
The support of many individuals and institutions was integral in bringing this book to fruition.I am indebted to the tremendous supervision and guidance of Allan English, and I was always able to count on the wisdom and insights of Donald Akenson and Jane Errington. While I was at Queen's University, the opportunity to design and teach my own course, History 401: Canada and the Great War, helped me to develop as a better historian. While the process of researching and writing is ofen an individual enterprise, as I learned from Dr. English, academic work is always improved by collaboration and networking.I appreciate the support and advice I received from many friends and colleagues throughout work on this project.I benefted from the encouragement of Craig Leslie Mantle and Geofrey Hayes, whose own work on Canadian ofcership helped shape my fascination in the topic.Te completion of this book took place while I was a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) postdoctoral fellow at the Canadian War Museum. In this role, I have shared Tim Cook's enthusiasm for military history and learned from his insights about the research process and the importance of sharing stories about the past.My historical research would not have been possible without the assistance of archivists and other staf at Library and Archives Canada (LAC), the Directorate of History and Heritage, and the National Archives in the United Kingdom.Te digitization work of the Canadiana Héritage project has opened tremendous research possibilities to all historians, and I was fortunate to have access to thousands upon thousands of scanned court martial records at my fngertips.Much of my archival research depended on analysts at LAC who diligently reviewed my many requests for access to information on ex-ofcers' restricted personnel fles.In particular, I wish to thank Kevin Joynt for his knowledge and assistance in navigating this process. For issues of copyright and licensing Crown material, I also appreciate the prompt work of Cédric Lafontaine at LAC.
