MY MOTHER, Madzy Brender à Brandis-van Vollenhoven, was born in Holland in 90, the third of four children in an upper-middle-class family.Her privileged childhood did little to prepare her for the varied and often difficult life she was to live.The protected existence did not, in fact, suit her: she rebelled against its restrictions, discovering in herself a great need to be free, a hankering for adventure, and a drive for self-fulfillment that were to last life long.As a young woman, despite her mother's disapproval, she studied law in Leiden, planning to practise in what was then the Dutch East Indies, but shortly before obtaining her degree she married.With her new husband, Wim Brender à Brandis, she lived for several years near New York City.On the eve of the Second World War, she and Wim returned to Holland.In 942 Wim was sent to a prisoner-of-war camp, and Madzy was left, in a time of great danger and hardship, to care for two small children.The reunited family emigrated in 947 to Canada to homestead on a farm in northern British Columbia.After selling the farm nine years later, both Madzy and Wim returned to university and earned Canadian degrees.Throughout all this, and for the rest of her life, Madzy was writing, in both Dutch and English.She contributed columns to four different newspapers in Holland and Canada.Her book about our life on the farm was published in English as Land for Our Sons; she was asked to translate it into Dutch, and the translated and revised edition, Land voor onze zonen, sold widely in Holland.She also wrote short stories and a quantity of material that was never published or was printed only for the family: diaries, memoirs, historical works, and innumerable letters.When she was no longer able to write by hand or to type, she made tapes.Her last important work was a chronicle, Memories, dictated when the arthritis had damaged her hands so badly that she could hardly hold a pen.
