W hen we first conceived the idea of chronicling the construc- tion of the four Welland Canals, we planned to present the whole saga in one volume covering the years to , but the men, machines, and challenges of the twentieth century burst the confines of one book, demanding a second volume.And so, in the first of our books, is Great National Object: Building the Nineteenth-Century Welland Canals (McGill-Queen's University Press, ), we described the construction of the first three Welland Canals between and .e book in your hands -in effect, volume of a two-volume studytells the story of a still little appreciated chapter of twentieth-century Canadian enterprise and achievement.As in volume , we stress "the human element," the way in which engineers, contractors, and workers confronted manifold problems "on the ground" and created what is still one of Canada's most spectacular technological accomplishments.We stress that, more than was the case in the nineteenth-century Welland waterways, the construction expertise involved was mainly Canadian in origin.Although not without difficulties, our research for volume has been easier than was that for the first book because, with the exception of the era of the ird Canal's construction, graphic material was limited for volume .On the other hand, during the two decades when the Welland Ship Canal was being built, the Department of Railways and Canals hired professional photographers to document the work.ese talented men were: John George Williams, who worked -; James W. Jarrett, -; J.A. McDonald -; and, a er , J.
