This wonderful volume, prepared by the department and division heads of the MGH under the inspired leadership and persistence of Joseph Hanaway, a loyal alumnus of our Faculty of Medicine and erstwhile trainee of the MGH; and John H. Burgess, a former director of cardiology; is a special tribute to an extraordinary institution that has served, taught, and inspired multiple generations of Montrealers and their families.The book and the institution it describes offer many lessons in the richness of the partnership between a community and the institutions it initiates and nurtures and that, in turn, serve the members of that community over a span of centuries.From the outset, the impetus for the creation of the hospital was the need to care for the burgeoning influx of immigrants, primarily from Ireland, Scotland, and England, who left their native lands to seek better fortunes in the New World.Hence, the General was created as a charitable institution and its attending physicians were barred from charging fees to their indigent patients.The hospital was founded by Montreal's Protestant community, including leaders from the Scots-Canadian community whose Presbyterian faith instilled in them a strong sense of service (particularly to their less fortunate brethren) and whose vision as Freemasons encompassed the construction of lasting institutions whose design and support merged both physical and spiritual values.The line of one founder and immigrant from Lincolnshire, John Molson (the elder), can be traced to seventh-generation offspring who live in Montreal and who use the General as "their" hospital.This sense of family among staff and patients is a feature of the institution's corporate ethos, and it is cited by all who work within it as characteristic of the quality of its healing environment.It is noteworthy that the original institution was first called the House of Charity and then the House of Recovery, a name that would befit the aspirations of a modern hospital.
