Résumé

September is one of the milder months in our Northern climate. The heat from the summer months transitions into the early signs of fall with leaves starting to change colours as flower pots bask in few more days of sunshine if covered overnight. Suddenly, on September 4, news of a stabbing spree shattered this bucolic environment. Ten people in and around the James Smith Cree Nation in Saskatchewan were killed, while 18 others were injured. The suspects, 2 brothers, later died, one from wounds and the other a drug overdose. These events were extensively covered by the international media. I report this tragedy due to its close association with the use of alcohol and crystal meth, as was highlighted by the Elders. A tragic mix of lifetime trauma and intergenerational violence emerged, most of which was handled by the sparse services of our correctional resources. The brother ultimately determined to be responsible for all of the deaths had just been paroled, despite a track record of 59 convictions. A dire need for local police and treatment resources were emphasized by the members of the grieving community. The relative lethality of the weapons used also came to mind. The absence of firearms likely limited the toll to 11 deaths which, though gruesome, is a lesser number compared with many of the repetitive mass murders experienced South of our border. This sequence of events forces us to reflect on the optimal management of substance use and violence. Past articles in the Canadian Journal of Addiction have focused mostly on opioid and prescription management in the jails.1,2 The ethics of compulsory treatment have also been discussed.3 Last, a sole article contributed by the UK compared the effectiveness of 2 substance abuse interventions, “Breaking Free Online” and “Pillars of Recovery,” with the latter demonstrating greater degree of improvement.4 These 4 articles are a useful contribution but nevertheless, overall, a meager body of knowledge. The September tragedy highlights the many gaps in our understanding of violence, the impact of legal and correctional systems as well as remedial, culturally informed biopsychosocial management in underserved areas. The Canadian Journal of Addiction welcomes submissions which explore any of these areas. With the suspect deceased, there will not be a public criminal trial and many questions will remain unanswered. A lengthy inquiry is promised in the new year about the circumstances and timelines leading to the deaths. The public profile afforded to these events and the current national priority advocated for the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Recommendations5 will hopefully kick-start meaningful changes at long last.
