Résumé
N I9^1 * WAS INVITED to watch a Cantonese opera, The fade Bracelet, in which a friend of mine performed the role of Sun Yujiao.I happened to have a camera with me and took a series of pictures during the performance. The photo on page 153 in this book is from that series, and is a memorable image.Nobody at that time had successfully attempted to photograph these operas in performance, as far as I knew.I was then looking for a theme to use in an attempt to gain a fellowship in the Royal Photographic Society, and this seemed tailor made.So I went, as a member of the audience, with cameras, to the Chinese theatre whenever an opera was performed.I grasped the technique as I progressed and gained experience. In 1985,1 got an RPS fellowship with this kind of photography. My interest continued to develop, not only as a photographer but also gradually as an opera lover. The opera styles I came across were then limited to Cantonese and Peking operas, but my chance came in 1986, when many regional opera troupes came to Hong Kong.I watched and took pictures of almost all the performances. At the same time, however, I began to consider that people had become more practical; the career of an opera performer did not have a promising future. If performers found more lucrative jobs elsewhere, most would march away from the profession. After twenty or thirty years, we might be able to see performances only rarely, and the names of the opera styles, stories, and performers would only be found in books.I enjoy these performances and the characters in them; I admire the performers. The only way that I could ensure their preservation was to keep records in a lively and vivid way, in a series of colourful photos. From 1986 until 1993, there was an annual Chinese regional opera festival, to which many troupes were invited.I attended the theatre constantly, taking more than 30,000 photos. In 1989 in Hong Kong, and again in 1992 in Vancouver, I displayed no fewer than 100 Chinese theatrical photos. But from 1994 to the present, operas have been performed less and less often. Some of the performers have died, retired, or changed their careers.A new generation must be brought up, encouraged, and trained, or this art will be seen no more after, say, fifty years. If my fear proves true, these photographs, if still preserved, will have some value and interest.IX
