Cultural and Human Ecology = The Sacred Noris Binet (bio) In 1982 when I came to work in the Lake Chapala area in Jalisco, Mexico from the University of Guadalajara, where I had earned my undergraduate degree in sociology and studied architecture and art, I was immediately enchanted by the pristine beauty of the lake and surrounding mountains. My work as a Cultural and Artistic Facilitator at the Auditorio de la Riviera would involve engagement with the local residents of the area to interest them in the offerings at the auditorium. Very soon I realized that the people of Ajijic, where the auditorium was located, displayed genuine kindness and a natural way of embracing people, making me feel welcome and at home in the community. (That I was a native of the Dominican Republic, spoke Spanish as my first language, and my skin color was brown didn't hurt either.) There was something in the Ajijic pueblo and adjoining towns that felt magical and not simply because of the surrounding beauty of a mountainous lake and the cobblestone village streets that lay along its shores. There was a unique, heart-openness of the native people who had lived here for generations and had been deeply transformed by the generous beauty and inherent richness of the area. Their daily lives were interwoven with the fertile land and rhythms of the changing seasons. They displayed a reverence for "grandfather mountain" and "grandmother lake." Embedded from birth within these natural wonders, the people developed an innocent and trusting attitude toward both life and the people they encountered who eventually came to live in their midst. Sadly, I came to realize that not everyone understands this embracing attitude nor appreciates it. Having been captured by this area and the people, it became my true home and remained that way over the 30-plus years I lived in the States, so when the opportunity arose to move back here a few years ago, my husband and I left California and found a place to rent near the plaza of Ajijic, with an easy walk to the lake in one direction and the mountains in the opposite. I saw that the beauty of the area was still here but something else had changed—not the native people either as welcoming and friendly as before. But many newcomers from the States, Canada, and Europe along with more well-to-do Mexicans, had found their way to the shores of Lake Chapala and brought about changes, not all positive. [End Page 40] Some of the immigrants to this land understood the connection between the native people, the land, lake, and mountains, many did not. When we fail to connect the natural beauty of a place with its inhabitants (both animal and human) we can turn a paradise into a nightmare for the very beings who have been its life participants and caretakers for generations. I believe that anyone who has the good fortune and or luck to land in a place where the natural beauty and climate exist as a shared natural resource for its inhabitants is obligated to preserve the natural environment and the surrounding culture that has developed over many lifetimes. The fruits of capitalism with its neoliberal impact have made it easy for those with resources to move about and find places of beauty, attraction, livability and to bring their out-sized financial resources to areas that have been filled by inhabitants who have existed merely from the bounty of land and water, lacking much by way of excess capital. Such is the story of Lake Chapala. It doesn't take a whole lot of capital, relatively speaking, to offer homeowners without much the lure of more money than they ever hoped to see. Or to convince land developers (mostly out-of-town developers) that moving up the mountain side will attract buyers and increase profits. Of course, local officials—also lured by financial incentive—collude to facilitate the developers' dreams. What do hillside trees and some fauna that depend on them count for? Many villagers watch, powerless it seems, as their hillsides become blighted by construction and their neighbor's homes are purchased and turned...
