I Cry for the Night Lorraine Caputo (bio) This evening I watch the blaze climb the volcano's slopeslava-likereaching close to those sleepless homesthe smell of burnt wood burnt grass, burnt alpine brush stings the sky & on the other side of the valley … & another wildfire to the south & another & another & beyond that far side of the vale, when the clouds partbillowing columns of acrid ash come from the depths of another fiery giant We wait, we await for the explosion from the earth's heartfrom the indigenous anger gathering in the sierra & the jungle We wait, we await silenced by decrees [End Page 54] & in the ash of wildfires & volcanoes& in the ash of burnt homes I cry for the night that has befallen this earth ________ Why is the moon full again tonight behind those broken cloudswhisping across the sky torn & frayed by a windripping at tin roofs nails straining to keep them from flyingthrough this cold, silent night wind howling through cracks down chimneys Something is afoot some fate awaits us. … Why is the moon full again tonight? ________ From my terrace I used to watch the sun hitched to this hill across the valley On Inti Raymi, riding the north slopeOn Kapak Raymi, touching the southern rise [End Page 55] But now it seems to never slide southward. … I think of the Inuit elders' warnings: The stars have shifted … & I cry for the night [End Page 56] Lorraine Caputo The works of poet-translator Lorraine Caputo (on the road, Latin America) appear in over 300 journals on six continents and 20 collections of poetry—including On Galápagos Shores (dancing girl press, 2019). Her writing has been nominated for the Best of the Net. She journeys through Latin America, listening to the voices of the pueblos and Earth.
