Interval Exercise Induces Greater Changes In Post-exercise Metabolism Compared To Submaximal Exercise In Middle-aged Adults
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Exercise intensity induces a dose-response on post-exercise metabolism in young adults (18-25 y) with greater perturbations following high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and sprint interval training (SIT) exercise compared to moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) exercise, however few studies have investigated this in middle-aged adults where combatting a positive energy balance is of great importance. PURPOSE: To examine the effect of submaximal, near maximal, and supramaximal intensity exercise on post-exercise metabolism in middle-aged adults. METHODS: 11 participants (male: 4, female: 7; age: 46 ± 10 y; V̇O2max: 34.37 ± 9.22 mL·kg-1·min-1; body mass index: 26.4 ± 2.7 kg·m-2) had their oxygen consumption (V̇O2) measured during and for 2 h following 4 experimental sessions: 1) no-exercise control (CTRL); 2) MICT exercise (30 min at 65% V̇O2max); 3) HIIT exercise (10 x 1 min at 90% heart rate maximum with 1 min recovery); and 4) modified-SIT exercise (8 x 15 s “all-out” effort with 2 min recovery). Between session differences for V̇O2, fat oxidation, respiratory exchange ratio, and heart rate were compared using two-way repeated measured analysis of variance. RESULTS: O2 consumed post-exercise was elevated during the 1st h following HIIT (16.0 ± 2.6 L; P = 0.042, d = 1.00) and modified-SIT (17.1 ± 3.4 L; P = 0.013, d = 1.23) exercise compared to CTRL (13.3 ± 1.9 L) and stayed elevated during the 2nd h following HIIT (14.8 ± 2.4 L) exercise compared to CTRL (12.0 ± 2.3 L; P = 0.083, d = 0.90). Total excess post-exercise oxygen consumption was elevated following modified-SIT exercise only (7.1 ± 7.0 L, P = 0.013, d = 1.07). Modified-SIT exercise increased fat oxidation (main effect of session; 0.101 ± 0.019 g·min-1) compared to all sessions post-exercise (CTRL: 0.057 ± 0.021 g·min-1; MICT: 0.071 ± 0.017 g·min-1; HIIT: 0.077 ± 0.016 g·min-1; P < 0.007, d > 1.30) with HIIT exercise increased fat oxidation compared to CTRL (main effect of session: P = 0.096, d = 0.87). CONCLUSION: Exercise intensity is an important factor to consider for changes in post-exercise metabolism in middle-aged adults with greater changes following HIIT and modified SIT exercise. Overall, our results align with data from younger recreationally active populations although they are more muted.
