THE OTHER MESTIZO: The African Filipinoer, By Gloria Ysmael Adams, M.Ed., NCC The FANHS defines a Filipino mestizo as anyone mixed with any other kind of blood. Most Filipinos want to define the Filipino mestizo as such only if he/she is mixed with Spanish, White American, British, Canadian with fair complexion, aquiline nose, deep seated eyes, etc. While there's a lot of Chinese Filipinos, Korean Filipinos and Japanese Filipinos that have been increasing lately, the term mestizo/mestiza. is seldom used to describe them. For the sake ofthis presentation, the "other mestizo" is African Filipino or black Pinoy or egot or itim in different levels of sounds depending on the level of prejudice and discriminatory intentions. Most Filipino circles would exclude the African Filipino as mestizos but would try very hard to embrace the mixture of white mestizos and mestizas or lovingly called Tisay or Tisoy as if there are no other mestizas or mestizos. Our young people of Filipino African American mixtures suffer also the brunt of discrimination among Filipinos, unless you are a child of Loida Nicolas and the late billionaire Reginald Lewis and Supreme Court Judge Thurgood Marshall and Cecilia Suyat. In Seattle, we have the child of King County Executive Ron Sims and Cayan Topacio, UW Vice President Myron Apilado whose father was a Filipino old-timer, visible educators including myself of which we are five visibly known in Seattle who have raised or still raising 41 Presented during the 11th National Biennial Conference of the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) held at the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii on June 29-July 1, 2006. 20 children who are the other mestizos/as which also include some ofthe Cordovas grandchildren. Almost always, if the mother is an immigrant, most Filipino immigrants will presume that the "other mestizo" was born out ofa relationship between a black military person and a woman with questionable morals as ifthere's no black man in other professions and workplace. The closing of the US bases in the Philippines has of course eradicated this presumption. When I sense discrimination among Filipinos, of course, I love to reaffirm what's in their minds and feed people's curiosity so I would tell Filipinos that I met my late partner at the Clark Air Base and sometimes, I say, at the Olongapo-Subic Naval Base. Their eyes would widely open this time and they become even more interested to know more about me so I give them another story. I was actually at Clark Air Base as a child ofa US Army officer so I know and I was at Subic Naval Base as an educator in Zambales. The truth is - I met my husband while I was in the US as an exchange educator and he went to the Philippines to pursue his intentions after two years ofnegotiation. AHA, the next question at this point in time why black, my response is that's where the heart is! I was an attractive lady at that time, economically stable, also smart, and well traveled and doing very well as a secondary school administrator and some Filipinos could not figure out that my partner is black. After all, this relationship has survived 36 years of living under the same roofand two long years oflong distance communication. My youngest son who is visibly black broke my heart when he asked me if he was adopted because he was surrounded by Filipinos and he was the Filipino American National Historical Society Journal Volume 7 2009 only one at the time who could not speak Tagalog and/or Ilocano. All the Philippine born Filipino eyes were all on my son and some of them would be extraordinarily kind and patronizing to him as if he is the only child ever to be seen with curly hair and dark brown skin. His education and social circle happen to be mixed, multicultural so he didn't really suffer much of the discrimination from predominantly white and/or Filipino cliques unlike some of the other Filipino Africans who have not been exposed to other multicultural connections.
