Fourteen years in Scotland, eleven Depression years on his immigrant family's Saskatchewan farm, six war years, fifteen years establishing his own farm family during the era of mechanization and electrification between 1945 and 1960, twenty years at the helm of a large grain company and at the centre of agricultural policy-making, nearly twenty more in an active semiretirement and still going strong as this is written: Mac Runciman has enjoyed a full life and met many responsibilities during his four score years and more.This book is testimony to the regard in which he is held by his colleagues.It also testifies to his perseverance and to that of his co-author, Paul Earl.It is, most of all, a valuable document on the history of western Canada.Though a memoir, the following narrative is uncanny in the way that it recapitulates the history of prairie Canada in the twentieth century.Mac Runciman was one of the last to sail the great immigrant wave that peopled -or more properly, re-peopled -the prairies between 1870 and 1930.He started out in the age of horse and wagon and the day-long haul to the country elevator.He could say with feeling, from personal experience, that no one in a wealthy society "should have been subjected to the hardships that people were subjected to in Saskatchewan in the '30s, it's as simple as that."He enlisted in Canada's army early in the Second World War and, as his leadership qualities became evident, rose steadily through the ranks.And then, almost by accident, or so it seemed to Mac, he was picked out from the crowd of ordinary citizens, those who surrounded him at the curling rink and the elevator local, and invited to accept greater responsibility.Within the span of a few years, he rose to the presidency of the United Grain Growers.For the next two decades, he managed this large organization and participated in the debates that accompanied the restructuring of Canada's agricultural economy and prairie Canada's rural society.Protesting all the way that he was just a farmer doing what was best for farming, Mac contributed a great deal during this extraordinary historical moment.He emerged from the crucible with reputation enhanced and his
