Middle-class parents struggling to meet the exorbitant expenses of therapy of their child, a sibling feeling deprived of love of a mother busy with caring for the other, a character with a terminal illness enjoying every moment of her limited days, a talented life cut short by an invincible condition. This or similar emotionally charged plots may move the general audience but usually fail to impress clinicians dealing with such situations routinely in actual life. However, the movie, “The sky is pink” seems to defy this assumption, on its strength of a believable story line, stellar performances by established actors, an urbane setting in sync with modern times, and avoidance of long shots of overdramatized grief. Despite having a somber theme, the film is actually a celebration of life, reminiscent of the masterpiece “Anand.” The movie, directed by Shonali Bose and released at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019, is based on the life of one of India's youngest motivational speakers (Aisha Chaudhary), who lost her battle for life in 2015, when she was 18 years old. The film is a sensitive screen adaptation of her autobiography “My Little Epiphanies,” released just a day before her demise. Despite her being the central character, the narrative is built around the chemistry and changing equations between her over-concerned mother, loving brother, and understanding but mild-mannered father who is struggling to make his family economically viable. The film touches upon important issues related to parenting and relationships between parents and children of today. A well-educated couple with a previous infantile death decides to continue an unplanned pregnancy against genetic odds, fully knowing the potential outcome, portrays human virtues and emotions attached with an unborn child. The firm refusal of the protagonist to accept a therapy which would increase her life expectancy by 10 years with the question “Will dying at 28 be easier than dying at 18?” speaks volumes about the agonized acceptance of an intelligent person, awaiting an inevitable outcome. The silent suffering of her loving brother, the overwrought mother who inadvertently ignores the needs, sacrifices, and contributions of her husband, and the strong but silent father are all portrayed in such a subtle manner, that what emerges is the inspiring story of fearless young Aisha who develops her own identity in the limited time she has. In this age of explosion of knowledge of all sorts, educated partners having been apprised about the chances of recurrence of a lethal condition in the next pregnancy, utilizing “rhythm method” to avoid pregnancy, reveals the triumph of blind faith in old-wives tales over science that is widely prevalent in our country. The fact that Aisha, who survives a lethal disease by a timely bone marrow transplant, but later succumbs to treatment-related complications, aptly brings out the message that successful initiation of challenging therapies is simply the first stepping stone in an uncertain and arduous journey. All in all, this is a film worth watching for the untiring efforts of parents, a passionate support system comprising family, friends, and doctors, and above all the untiring zestful spirit of young Aisha, who wants to live her life to the fullest.
