Taking Kierkegaard Back to Church: The Ecclesial Implications of the Gospel By Aaron P. Edwards
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Edwards’s vision of Kierkegaard as a preacher brings a practical lens to his body of work. This point of view is applied best against his critics and, to a greater extent, Christendom. Christendom itself is presented as an ongoing issue that is still relevant today, as opposed to simply a product of nineteenth-century Denmark. Edwards demonstrates this approach to Kierkegaard’s work as a challenge against Christendom, but additionally he uses it to provide a holistic and mostly practical application of Kierkegaard’s work beyond the usual negativity associated with it. What I find interesting about Edwards’s approach to demonstrating the ecclesial weight of Kierkegaard’s text is that much of his analysis is contingent on how Kierkegaard’s negative criticisms against the church are what brings merit to the idea of him as a preacher. For example, when he presents Kierkegaard’s work against the New Homiletic, part of what makes Kierkegaard relevant in the discussion is how Kierkegaard’s position seems to criticize the role of the preacher by spinning their significance around back to the text. Edwards states ‘his efforts to defamiliarize the Bible in Christendom were rooted not merely in creative retelling and ambiguous indirection but in the personal and consequential appropriation of the Word of God within the reader, hearer, and preacher’ (p. 62). Kierkegaard’s statement as a teacher is a call for that relationship to be restructured, according to Edwards, as one that puts Scripture first by removing the authority of the preacher.
