Welcome to Muiwanalej Kikmanaqik: "Let's Honour Our Ancestors"This volume explores the lives of noteworthy Mi'kmaw individuals whose thoughts, actions, and aspirations had an impact on the history of the Northeast, but whose activities were too often relegated to the shadows of history.In this work, these persons' achievements hold centre stage.This is essentially a reference book; providing a lengthy index so that information pertaining to these persons may be retrieved and used as basis for further research.There is much to admire in Mi'kmaw leaders' past community and emigration policies, organizational and negotiating skills, diplomatic endeavours, and stewardship of land and resources.This is matched today by important new insights furnished by excellent Mi'kmaw scholars who successfully re-centre Indigenous nationhood and lifeways and so have "an impact on the way we understand the field itself." 1 It is hoped that, in providing new information and perspectives, this volume too will engage the interest of Indigenous and non-Indigenous readers alike, engender pride in Mi'kmaw leadership legacies, and encourage Mi'kmaw youth and others to probe more deeply into the history of the Northeast.The project was instigated with a threefold purpose: to encourage senior scholars to submit works on noted or interesting individuals, to enable Aboriginal university students to research and write Mi'kmaw biographies, and to confirm Mi'kmaw history as an integral part of Canadian and American history.It progressed through two stages, with these goals remaining paramount throughout.During stage one, from the spring of 1990 to the fall of 1991, the project received assistance from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) under postdoctoral grants 456-89-0192 and 457-90-0153.Owing to SSHRC's generous support the recipient of these grants, Janet E. Chute, was able to hire two industrious Aboriginal university students, Doris Labradore and Natalie McConnell, as her assistants.All three toured the Northeast conducting research in archives and museums and meeting local historians.Doris and Natalie remained part of the project until late 2008.
