Design, fabrication, and optimization of a bidirectional mesoscalepiezoelectric motor
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Motors driven by piezoelectric actuators are prevalent in small scale applications on the order of millimeters to centimeters.Piezoelectric motors allow for precise high torque performance at low speeds without the need for gears. However, these motors are challenging to mass produce due to complex geometries and complicated and expensive fabrication processes.Existing designs are largely focused on travelling-wave type actuation mechanisms, which require the segmentation of the piezoelectric elements along with multiple drive signals to induce the travelling wave. This work takes inspiration from an existing design based on a stator with three unimorph arms that drive the rotor with frictional forces via an actuated standing-wave.The stator has a diameter of 9 mm and a thickness of 0.267 mm and is made of a passive layer and a PZT element adhered to each arm.The design is significantly simpler compared to the travelling-wave type motors as it only requires one drive signal to create the standing waves in the arms of the stator.Initial experiments have shown that this type of actuation can also cause controllable bi-directional rotation under certain conditions.A set of experiments tested the motor performance at varying frequencies and polarities of the driving signal to evaluate the response of the stator.A high-speed video of each experiment has been tracked, from which the starting torque is evaluated for both the clockwise and counterclockwise rotational directions. This work further investigates the exact pattern correlating the direction of the rotation, the frequency, and the polarity of the drive signal. In addition, the geometry of the design provides room for simplification of the fabrication process and conversion to a lamination-like method using UV laser machined sheet materials layered with PZT elements. This improved fabrication method allows for consistent, reliable, and cost-effective bulk production.

Scores machine (provisoires)
