Experimental study on the effect of moisture on the anisotropicmechanical behaviour of direct compounded compression moulded glass/PA6 LFTcomposites under shear loading

Résumé
The automotive industry has made reducing weight a top priority due to the benefits of increased fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.Thermoplastic matrix composites have become increasingly prevalent in recent years due to their distinctive properties, such as fracture toughness, reheating ability, improved impact resistance, recyclability, and cost-effectiveness compared to the current state-of-the-art thermoset materials and processes.Long-fibre thermoplastic (LFT) materials are extensively utilized in the automotive and aerospace industries, and it is critical to comprehend their mechanical performance under varying loading and environmental conditions.Material characterization under shear loading is essential for the precise analytical and numerical modelling of novel LFT structures in crashworthiness design to capture the anisotropic behaviour. In order to evaluate the shear response of LFT materials, this study employed a V-Notched Beam Shear Testing (Iosipescu -ASTM D5379) apparatus to examine direct compounded compression moulded Polyamide6 (PA6)/glass LFTs with a fibre content of 30% in two different flow and charge regions.Engineering shear strain and effective strain data were recorded using MTS video extensometers and Correlated Solutions VIC-2D DIC software for post-processing.This study aimed to determine the influence of moisture content on the LFT materials by comparing both dried and undried samples during shear loading.Moisture content was released from the specimen in nine days following the establishment of steady-state mass reduction in a vacuum oven at 80C.Anisotropic material characterization was completed in four different specimen directions, namely, 0, 90, and 45 orientations relative to the flow direction during compression moulding.Experimental observations indicated that specimens with a 45 orientation had higher shear modulus compared with other directions, as they exhibited 4.78 GPa shear modulus for dried samples and 3.75 GPa for undried samples. However, the ultimate shear strength recorded for this direction was 72.6 MPa, which was lower than the response of 82.4 MPa for the charge 0 direction. In both environmental conditioning, the charge region displayed a higher shear property than the flow region, especially in the 0 direction.Furthermore, the presence of moisture content changed the material's behaviour from brittle to ductile during shear loading.Consequently, under various testing conditions, humidity significantly reduced the shear modulus from 16% to 30%.Moreover, there is a corresponding decrease in ultimate shear strength from 13% to 29% based on the results.
