Together The Revised Texts and The Annotated Autobiography are enormous aids for tracing the migration of Wilder’s narrative from adult auto­ biography to juvenile fiction. Despite the careful editing and extensive annotation, this volume, like all sources, requires attention to context and perspective . Wilder wrote Pioneer Girl through the filters of memory,the stock market crash that consumed Lane’s savings, and the New Deal that both women hated. The childhood she remembered did not build to the kinds of peaks and progress that editors wanted.The perspectives of the volume editors surface occasionally .They assert,for instance,that Wilder did not see hardship as debilitating or depressing, a judgment I would be more hesitant to make.The extensive bibli­ ographies in both The Annotated Autobiography and The Revised Texts are valuable starting points for future scholars, but they can’t include all relevant­ secondary literature or all good Wilder scholarship. Both of these books are a visual delight, and both of these accomplished photographers are intrigued by the ways in which time and place are linked together in the localities they capture on film.The images they create reflect very different approaches to landscape photography, and they demonstrate how each artist has taken his own creative journey across the region. For Richard Buswell, the journey has been a long one,and his new collection of work reflects a ­sampling from five decades of photography across Montana. The seventy-two duotone images in the book are focused on Montana’s ghost towns and abandoned homesteads. As he notes in the Preface, “My intent has been to seek and photograph beauty in decay; to raise things from the unseen to the seen; to extract the abstract from the commonplace; to express rather than describe” (ix). Buswell succeeds wonderfully in this quest. His careful eye for abstract form and pattern in the artifacts he discovers in these forgotten places produces an assortment of vivid, sometimes startling images. Deeply fascinated by how time passes in a place, Buswell produces focused studies of objects such as the weathered keys of an old cash register, a doll’s head, a raptor skeleton, or a curious collection of long-forgotten coffee pots.
