Résumé
Bringing this anthology to fruition has been an amazing learning experience, and it has been my sincere intent to honour the significant contributions that have been made to Saskatchewan literature by our Indigenous writers and storytellers.While this anthology is the first of its kind in Saskatchewan, it was most certainly inspired by the great work of Manitowapow: Aboriginal Writings from the Land of Water, edited by Warren Cariou and Niigaanwewidam James Sinclair, and published by HighWater Press.When I attended the book launch in February 2012 in the Tower Atrium at the Forks Market in Winnipeg, I was astounded by the immensity of the work, and by all the writers and community members gathered together to celebrate the rich oral and written traditions of Manitoban Indigenous communities.It motivated me to finally begin a project that had been simmering in my mind for some time: to bring together the diverse Indigenous stories of my home province of Saskatchewan.Cariou and Sinclair's work helped me realize that this project was possible and something to celebrate.It took me some time to figure out where to begin.Of course, I knew of the great Saskatchewan Indigenous writers; I had been reading and teaching their works for years, but I was still uncertain where to start-that is, until March of 2013 when I attended the book launch at the Artesian Performance Venue in Regina for The Literary History of Saskatchewan, edited by David Carpenter and published by Coteau Books.In the first chapter, "'Our New Storytellers': Cree Literature in Saskatchewan," Kristina Fagan Bidwell locates the earliest Indigenous writings in English in the lands now designated by Saskatchewan.I also found in this chapter the guiding image for the anthology with Bidwell's meditation on the Saskatchewan River: "with its deceptively slow-moving surface and its ever-shifting sandbars[, w]ith its permanence and its
