ISBN 9781665937788 $10.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 8-12 Clara Ketterling-Dunbar is the only woman out of twenty-eight people on an Antarctic expedition, and she holds her secrets close—first, she’s eighteen, not twenty-one; second, she’s American and not Canadian; and third, she’s a suffragist with ties to the WSPU in England. Frustrated with the setbacks to the suffragist movement at the start of World War I, Clara sets out to prove herself, but now [End Page 179] that the expedition’s ship has gotten stuck on the ice, the stakes are higher than ever. Clara has dealt with misogynistic comments and people underestimating her ability, and now she must get along with a volatile crew to overcome supply issues, the cold, and a dwindling supply of food as they try to find their way back to civilization. In journal format, Clara begins to create a guide for future women travelers of the Antarctic, filling them in on what challenges they might encounter in their crew and the unique troubles that come with the frigid territory. Ultimately, though, this turns into a journal about Clara’s camaraderie with her crewmates, as she fights for herself and resorts to things that are rather unladylike (like clubbing penguins over the head). Lai successfully blends the events of Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition with the social climate of the suffragist movement in 1914 and pairs it with a sharp-witted, charismatic narrator who readers can easily root for. An author’s note details the historical inspiration for the events of the story, real-life influences on the characters, and important women travelers of the past.
