ISBN 9780593382226 $10.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 7-11 In the wake of her failed suicide attempt, Isabel “Libby” Feldman, her little sister, and her mother move into a massive, worn-down Queen Anne Victorian house that quickly reveals itself to be perhaps more Gothic—in the undoubtedly haunted and grotesque sense. Libby’s mother is convinced the new location (a family inheritance she had all but neglected until now) will help with the healing process, but the house seems the opposite of comforting, given the overgrowth of thorny blue roses, the apparent infestation of eerie insects, and a shady history with seances dating back to the 1890s. Their mother’s established connection to the house makes her the first to be wholly taken over by one of the unique bug or flower masks found [End Page 176] in each room, and all three are coaxed and seduced by the power that the different masks offer to a uniquely vulnerable family still reeling from a crisis. Libby’s mental health (including diagnoses of bipolar III and generalized anxiety disorder) and the effect it has on her family is presented with nuance and compassion, authentically explored while woven into the overall plot. Coupling her unease with the motifs of creepy seance masks, squirming bugs, and the uncontrolled sprawl of rose bushes, the novel is strikingly meaningful—and effectively unsettling—in its considerations of performance, metamorphosis, and growth. Even in the chaos, Libby manages to crush on a boy, but the threat of having their souls destroyed and bodies stolen only seems to heighten the more palpable risk of dating amid very real trauma.
