Résumé
Reaktion Books' "Renaissance Lives" series appears designed for an audience somewhere between the general reader and the experienced scholar. To judge from this volume (the first I have perused), the series will be a welcome addition to the bookshelves of anyone interested in early modern art, literature, politics, and culture; the notably handsome production of both text and illustrations certainly enhances its appeal. In the case of Andrew Hadfield's Thomas Nashe and Late Elizabethan Writing, the interest of even the active scholar will be piqued, since the book treats a literary figure, usually considered if not "major" then highly significant, who emerges as more contradictory and possibly even more incoherent than any other writer of the period. While the reader might expect at the outset a comforting grounding in the subject, the introduction, "Nashe's Life, Interests, and Circle, " provides an unsettling summary of the disconcerting and puzzling psychological and ideological contradictions and paradoxes of Nashe's career, including especially his curious obsession with his nemesis Gabriel Harvey. The first chapter, "Religion, " contains important clues for the apparent contradiction between Nashe's rebellious spirit and the conservatism of his ideological commitments: as the introduction has posited, this "angry satirist" was at the same time a "deeply religious man" (9, 12).The son of a clergyman, Nashe's role as one of the anti-Martinist writers in the Martin Marprelate debates shows his keen desire to defend the state Protestant church against (Puritan) attacks on episcopal hierarchy and authoritarianism. While "references to religion are legion throughout [Nashe's] works, " for Hadfield the "main animating principle in Nashe's writings is not doctrinal, but a hostility to sectarian schism" (53).Nashe's deep respect for learning explains his resistance to "democratizing the clergy" (49) and may also explain his hostility to "claims that ingenuity and true religion are at odds, and that faith requires the rejection of pleasure, sophistication, and complexity" (58).Such rationale, however, leads to the more doubtful reading of Christ's Tears over Jerusalem as a political assertion that "there can be no understanding without the use of paradox and wit, and [that] a simple and straightforward belief in God's grace is unlikely to be enough in […] times
