Résumé
As we embark on 2024, Small Structures enters its 5th volume of publication. The journal has evolved and grown since its launch, in no small part due to the dedicated efforts of our experienced, professional, in-house editorial team supported by our excellent advisory board members, who are leading experts in their field. We are indebted to our reviewers who have embraced our new journal and give of their time to evaluate the submitted work. Our board members and reviewers have been instrumental in setting a high standard of quality for articles published and we encourage reviewers and authors alike to keep this in mind when evaluating or submitting to Small Structures going forward. This past year saw the departure of Dr. Jovia Jiang as Editor-in-Chief of Small Structures. Jovia has a new focus within Wiley and we wish her all the best with her new endeavours. Having joined Wiley over 18 years ago, I am pleased to have recently taken on the Editor-in-Chief role of this journal in addition to the sister journal Particle & Particle Systems Characterization, one of the hybrid journals in our portfolio. In my time at Wiley, I have worked on some of our best known titles, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials and Small and have been fortunate to interact with and meet many of the authors that publish with us. After receiving my Ph.D. in Dublin City University, Ireland, I carried out postdoctoral research in Università di Roma “La Sapienza“, Italy and at The Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala University, Sweden. My colleagues Dr. Harry Pinfold, who has already worked on the journal for some time and a new colleague to the team, Dr. Aron Urbatsch will also be handling your submissions. Each editor brings broad and varied experience to the table in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Together with a team of administration and production colleagues, we will work together to provide you with the best possible service. One of the most significant changes this past year has being the conversion to fully open access (OA) publication. The authors of Small Structures have embraced this change, perhaps in part, due to the benefits of publishing OA – work is available to read and share worldwide – with articles being viewed, on average, nearly four times more than subscription articles and subsequently being cited nearly twice as much. This has been reflected in the most recent impact factor of 15.9, released in June by Clarivate Analytics. When we look at the highest cited articles published in 2021 and 2022, we see the breath of topics covered by Small Structures, which appeals to our broad readership (see Table 1). Articles accepted for publication in Small Structures are presently subject to an APC of $3,250 USD/£2,450 GBP/€2,750 EUR. Wiley, being committed to a future where OA becomes more and more the choice for dissemination of research work, has been instrumental in recent years, implementing transformational agreements, often referred to simply as TA agreements. These agreements allow researchers at participating institutions unlimited read access to a publisher's portfolio of journals, as well as funding to cover APCs when choosing to publish OA. Please refer to the Wiley Author Services webpage Institutional Payments | Wiley to inform yourself of OA deals presently in place. Automatic APC waivers and discounts will be given to authors from countries on the Waivers and Discounts List. Authors should submit a waiver or discount request during the submission of their article. Another change to the journal this year was the rearrangement of our Editorial Advisory Board. We acknowledge the support from all of our editorial board members.
