Résumé
The idea for this book began while co-directing the public history project and website "Breaking the Colour Barrier: Wilfred 'Boomer' Harding and the Chatham Coloured All-Stars."That project would never have happened without the trust and generosity of Pat and Blake Harding, who were willing to share their carefully preserved scrapbooks on the Chatham Coloured All-Stars and sports career of their father and father-in-law, Wilfred "Boomer" Harding, as well as their time and commitment to see the project through.I never would have imagined a chance meeting at a history event I attended in Chatham in 2015 would lead to such a journey, but I am so grateful for it.I am privileged to have co-directed the project with colleagues in Leddy Library, University of Windsor, Heidi Jacobs and Dave Johnston, whose vision and expertise helped grow the project in ways I could not have done on my own.The support of the Chatham Sports Hall of Fame, the Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society and Black Mecca Museum, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and the University of Windsor was instrumental, along with the many University of Windsor students and others who worked on it.A special thank you to all the families of the Chatham Coloured All-Stars who were willing to share their stories to make the history and memories of this team come to life once again.As I turned to the book, I was grateful to have the help of Ron Leary, whose research assistance went far beyond what I might have expected or imagined.His keen eye and research instincts (along with his tolerance for reading newspapers on microfilm) helped me move the story backward and forward in time, tracking clues and finding answers.As well, his help getting the manuscript ready for publication was also invaluable.I had several great student research assistants including Joshua Deehan, Julienne Rousseau, and Willow Key.I also had other research help from Linda Bunn, who kindly volunteered to search early newspapers in Windsor and Essex County for reports on Black baseball teams.I received assistance from librarians and staff at the Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society and Black Mecca Museum (particularly Dorothy Wright Wallace and Samantha Meredith),
