Résumé
Lillian Allen was born in Jamaica.She grew up in a prominent family in Spanish Town, with an extended family network living in close proximity.The boundaries between family and community were not always fixed and Allen has often linked her investment in an ethic of community activism and care and her commitment to working class solidarity with these early formative experiences.School and church were central pillars of community life.Allen attended St. Jago High School, one of the oldest continuously running schools in the Western hemisphere.She has noted that within her family, her generation was the first among a small number of people in the community to complete primary school and high school education.She attended the Methodist and Baptist churches and her father was a leader in the community and in the church.Some of her earliest experiences of performing poetry publicly were at church, school, and community events.She has also linked her early love of art to the creativity of her mother who made everything look beautiful and magical and who was a seamstress who also practiced embroidery while doing the daily work of caring for and raising a family of ten siblings.Allen moved to Kitchener in 1969 to join her sister who had by then migrated to Canada for work.She moved to New York City in 1970 to study at CUNY where she took courses in Communications and Black Studies.During her time in NYC, she also worked at the publication Caribbean Daily where an early version of her well-known poem "I Fight Back" was first published.In 1973, Allen returned to Jamaica to join what she called the "socialist revolution" that was taking place as the country turned towards democratic socialism.She worked with the Ministry of Education writing curriculum material and started a magazine called MinEd.
