Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Post-Soviet Immigration : certainty is no Longer what it Used to be (Montreal as an exemple ). Post-Soviet immigration, the fourth wave of immigration during the past century, is the most heterogeneous. It did not form a collectivity according to the standards of the Loi canadienne sur le multiculturalisme. Its common denominator, the Russian language is not a sufficient criterion. The atheism of the majority as does not allow, as for some other ethnic groups, to make religion the central factor of a communitarian gathering. The first wave, «The White Russians» one, immersed itself in the nostalgia of Holy Russia and the distrust of the USSR ; the second one, fleeing Stalin’s camps after the war, tried to pass unnoticed and blend into the mass of people ; the third one, Jewish in majority convinced that it would conquer the right to be Jewish on northern American territory, showed eagerness to forget its sad past. The fourth one, was free to leave, attracted by the opulence of the New World. Convinced of their capacity to have the same positions they had in the USSR, many had to face disappointment and be content with casual jobs. The unexpected development of Moscow, the capacity of Russian people to master I.T. modified the dilapidated image of the country they had left. Although they had abandoned «the spiritual values» acquired at Soviet schools, most of the immigrants remained attached to their past : their children went to Russian schools, they bought books published in Russia, they had Russian tv via satellites installed, they flew back to their native country for their holiday. It is an indispensable compensation when you can’t make yours the culture of your country. Michael Epstein translates this strange ambiguity between two realities, the one you willingly abandoned and the other that you chose. Is it nostalgia ? A form of patriotism you were not aware of before leaving ? And of a country which no longer exist anymore ? Or of a country which emerged and in which there is no places for you any longer ?
