UATEMALA UNEXPECTEDLY slipped into my life in July 1983.An adult educator and United Church of Canada diaconal minister, I was working at Dialogue Centre, a United Church ecumenical peace and justice program in Montreal.I was asked to be an official observer at the World Council of Churches (WCC) Assembly in Vancouver.No lover of bureaucratic meetings, church or otherwise, I reluctantly agreed to attend, more from a sense of duty and a desire to visit family and friends than from genuine enthusiasm.Little did I know that the eloquence of a Guatemalan poet, journalist, and theologian, Julia Esquivel, would move me from reluctance to lifechanging awareness.A diminutive woman in her fifties with short white hair, Julia had struggled against injustice all her adult life.A single-minded prophet, she was forced into exile, living among strangers in Switzerland, searching for ways to break the silence surrounding the brutal war in her homeland.Only a handful of the hundreds of people gathered from around the world knew the story that this courageous woman was about to share.Her directness and passion were riveting as she told the story of thousands of Maya campesinos (rural farmers), church, cooperative and labour leaders, university students, and professors who were being tortured, disappeared, raped, and assassinated by the Guatemalan army.By the summer of 1983, over four hundred Maya villages had been burned to the ground; hundreds of horrific massacres of men, women, and children had taken place across the country; and more than a million Maya in a population of eight million had fled their homes to hide in the capital, the South Coast, and the mountains, or to seek refuge in Mexico.Her story touched me deeply.I was enraged that lives could matter so little, that such horrendous terror could be perpetrated on thousands of social activists and entire communities of indigenous people without the world being aware.How was it that I, a fairly knowledgeable social activist, knew virtually nothing about this savage war being waged only a few hours' flight south?After all, Nicaragua and El Salvador appeared in the media regularly.
