Established in 1976, the Calgary Institute for the Humanities has as its aim the fostering of advanced study and research in all areas of the humanities.Apart from supporting work in the traditional "arts" disciplines such as philosophy, history, ancient and modern languages and literatures, it also promotes research into the philosophical and historical aspects of the sciences, social sciences, fine arts, and the various "professional" disciplines.The Civilization and Rapid Climate Change Conference set out to bring together the knowledge of scientists, social scientists and humanists on one of the most difficult problems facing humanity-the threat to civilization posed by events such as overpopulation and nuclear war and the rapid climate changes they induce.Previous studies have been made of the environmental consequences of nuclear war.For example, the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) in 1985 published their findings on this topic, later summarized for lay readers by Lydia Dotto and issued under the title Planet Earth in Jeopardy by John Wiley in 1986.There is also the result of the 1983 Conference on the Long-Term Worldwide Biological Consequences of Nuclear War published under the title The Cold and the Dark: The World After Nuclear War (Norton, 1984).These studies concentrated narrowly on the scientific knowledge of the impact of nuclear war on the environment.Accepting the previous scientific findings, the Calgary conference broadened the focus to include evidence from the social sciences and humanities.The context was also enlarged from nuclear war to include other cases of human-and naturally-induced rapid climate changes and their effects on civilization.This conference also differed from previous ones in that it was not structured around prepared papers.Rather it was a three-day (August 22-24, 1987) intensive working seminar in which the participants pooled and synthesized their knowledge.On the first day disciplinary groups were formed under the headings Anthropology, Archaeology, Biology, Meteorology, History, Literature, and Environments of the Past.Summary papers were prepared at the end of the day.On the second day two large groups-one of scientists and another of social scientists and humanists-were formed to further discuss and synthesize the disciplinary findings of day one.The third day all the participants met in plenary sessions to hear the previous day's conclusions and then
