Résumé
The focus of this chapter is a fifteenth-century Flemish psalter (Toronto, Royal Ontario Museum, 997.158.15), interpreted here as a socially conscious archival project that attests to the resilience, diplomacy, and foresight of its widowed female patron. This discussion calls for an expanded function of the book that subsumes devotional concerns within a larger agenda, one intimately bound to the physical alteration of the book around 1480. New codicological evidence reveals how the interrelated acts of remembering and collecting work to compile a revised family history, shaped by memories of ancestral status, social alliance, and civic engagement. But another layer of documentation is gathered here, intent on reaffirming the patron&s;s social persona and agency in the wake of significant domestic and civic trauma. Two notable modifications to the manuscript offer special insight: The incorporation of an older and rather unusual textblock as the core of the whole project; and the addition of new images keyed to the patron&s;s experience. Underscoring the material-visual focus of this project, these modifications do substantial archival work. Not only do they preserve palpable ancestral and social traces, they also assemble alternative perspectives on the patron&s;s past that impart new meaning to her present circumstances and negotiate new prospects for future generations. The psalter&s;s capacity to straddle temporalities, gather various social networks, and accommodate a range of audience – from the patron, its initial user, to her descendants – renders it a remarkably flexible entity. As such, it invites engagement with an interdisciplinary body of gender and material studies, especially those emphasizing the cultural property and socio-economic experience of elite women in Burgundian Flanders, but also those attentive to the book object itself as a potential agent of change. This study is thus framed by theories of objecthood and collection practice that seek to disentangle and more fully evaluate the ties that bind possession to possessor.
