Costanzo Di Girolamo (1948–2022) Wendy Pfeffer and Francesco Carapezza It is with sadness that we report the death of Costanzo Di Girolamo, who passed away on October 13, 2022, concluding a long and illustrious career. Di Girolamo was a son of Naples. A graduate of the University of Naples in 1970 with a doctorate on Ausias March, he was an assistant professor there initially before taking a position at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Then followed a post at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, before he returned to Italy. His next position was at the University of Calabria in Cosenza before he returned to Naples and to the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in 1989. His teaching included the disciplines of Romance philology, Italian language and literature, literary theory, and Romance linguistics. He was affiliated with Harvard University's Center for Italian Renaissance Studies at the Villa I Tatti in Florence between 1977–1979. Among his many accomplishments, he was instrumental in the development of Occitan digital humanities. He founded the online journal Lecturae tropatorum (<http://www.lt.unina.it/>) in 2008 and served on its editorial board until 2018. He coordinated RIALC: Repertorio informatizzato dell'antica letteratura catalana (<http://www.rialc.unina.it/>) starting before 1999; and had responsiblities with RIALTO: Repertorio informatizzato dell'antica letteratura trobadorica e occitana (<http://www.rialto.unina.it/>) from its founding until 2018. He served as president of the Associazione italiana di Studi Catalani (2000–2008), which named him an emeritus member. His teaching was conducted largely at the Università degli studi di Napoli Federico II, where he was professor of Romance philology and from which he retired as professor emeritus. His scholarship covered a breadth of topics, the study of texts in Catalan, Occitan, Italian, and Sicilian, literary theory, and detailed philological analysis. In the field of Old Occitan studies, his book on the troubadours (1989, 2nd revised ed. 2021) must be singled out for effectively merging scholarship with explanation, thus making it a useful tool for university students, together with [End Page 287] his manuals on versification (1979) and language (1996, with Charmaine Lee). After a fruitful parenthesis when he dealt mainly with medieval Catalan poetry as an extension of the troubadour tradition, Di Girolamo returned to the troubadours from 2005 onwards with a series of essays on well- and lesser-known texts, skillfully blending textual philology with interpretation. Philology as necessary for interpretation and interpretation as the ultimate goal of philology are, in fact, the concepts that inform his 2019 collection of essays, Filologia interpretativa, which contains a selection of his recent contributions to Occitan studies.
